این ترانه رتبه یک چارت های بریتانیا و استرالیا رو بدست آورده. این ترانه شاید پرانتقادترین ترانه Eminem باشه که بهش گفتن: cultural milestone (مرحله مهم فرهنگی)
این ترانه در مورد طرفدار (fan) امینم هست که توسط Eminem افکارش تحت تاثیر قرار گرفته و بهش نامه ای می نویسه ولی جوابی دریافت نمی کنه. طرفدارش (Stan) با دوست دختر حامله ش توی کامیون در پلی میرن. سه بند اول(Verse) این شعر از زبان Stan ایراد شده. در این ترانه از صداسازی، بطور قوی استفاده شده، با غرش آسمان و باران در زمینه ش و هم چنین صدای یه قلم در دو بند اول لیریک. وقتی Stan از پل با ماشینش حرکت می کنه، صدای چرخ ماشین شنیده میشه و ماشین از پل سقوط می کنه. چهارمین بند لیریک در مورد جواب امینم به Stan هست. وقتی امینم می خواد جوابش رو بده، می فهمه که Stan مرده.
این ترانه هم چنین می تونه به عنوان جوابی به منتقدانش باشه، که میگن باعث افزایش اعتیاد و خشونت شده. اگرچه به گفته خودش نباید لیریک ترانه هاش زیاد جدی گرفته بشه. این ترانه را اینجا ببین.
در مورد لیریک این ترانه:
در بند اول لیریک، Stan برای سومین بار به امینم می نویسه به امید اینکه قهرمانش بهش جواب می ده. علاقه ش رو نسبت به امینم می گه (’من اتاقی پر از پوستر و عکسات دارم)، می گه شاید امینم دو نامه قبلی ش رو دریافت نکرده. Stan هم چنین می گه که دوست دخترش حامله است و اسم دخترش رو Bonnie می ذاره. از خودکشی یکی از اعضای خانواده میگه: (’من در مورد عموت، رونی، خوندم. متاسفم. من یه دوستی داشتم که به خاطر دختری (bitch)خودش رو کشت.’)، در عین حال که پیش زمینه ترانه شوم انگیز هست. در این Verse بارش باران و غرش آسمان تهدید و بدیمنی و شوم رو می رسونه.
در دومین بند لیریک، Stan ناامید شده. می خواد با خوش بینی به قضیه نگاه کنه اما عصبانی می شه و میگه: (’من دیوونه نشدم، فکر کنم تو به طرفدارات جواب نمی دی). غرش آسمان در پیش زمینه تندتر و با صدای بلندی به گوش می رسه. با جملاتی مثل ‘بعضی اوقات می برمش تا ببینم چقدر خون ازش بیرون میاد، مثل آدرنالین 1هستش، درد مثل یه حمله ناگهانی است برام’ نشون میده که Stan دیوانه شده. Stan به برادرش ، Matthew، اشاره می کنه که طرفدار جدی امینم هست، حتی بیشتر از خود Stan. Stan از دست امینم ناراحته چون در کنسرتش به داداشش Matthew امضا نداده. Stan با جملات (’من هم پدرم رو نشناختم، اون همیشه مامان رو فریب می داد و می زدش.’) نشون میده که چقدر به امینم مشابه هست. نامه ش رو با ‘ StanP.S. ما باید با همدیگه باشیم، مخلص شما.’ تموم میکنه.
در بند سوم لیریک Stan مشغول ضبط نواری است که در ماشینش در پلی حرکت می کنه. اون پریشون هست و کلماتش نامعلوم: (من خیلی خواب آلودم، خوابم میاد). دوست دختر حامله ش در کامیون، مشغول جیغ کشیدنه. غرش آسمان و باران تندتره. Stan عصبانیه و به امینم میگه:
Dear Mister-I’m-Too-Good-To-Call-Or-Write-My-Fans(آقای عزیز، من احساس خوبی دارم وقتی به طرفدارام می نویسم یا صداشون می زنم). از وضعیت بدش میگه:
I’m in the car right now, I’m doing 90 on the freewayHey Slim, I drank a fifth of vodka, you dare me to drive (من الان در ماشینم، در یه آزادراه، ودکا (عرق روسی)خورده ام، تو باعث می شی تا رانندگی کنم.)، این عبارت در ترانه My Name Is امینم نیز نقل شده. هم چنین Stan به افسانه قدیمی اشاره می کنه که Collins مردی رو در حال غرق شدن می بینه، اما تماشاچی نزدیکش کاری برای نجاتش انجام نمی ده. صدای جیغ شنیده می شه و Stan اشاره می کنه که دوست دختر حامله ش در کامیون داره خفه می شه:
Thats my girlfriend screaming in the trunk But I didn’t slit her throat I just tied her up (این دوست دختر منه که توی کامیون جیغ می کشه، اما من گلوش رو نبریدم، فقط حبسش کردم تا متوقفش کنم.)، که به ترانه Kim امینم برمی گرده که امینم می خواد زنش Kim رو بکشه و در آخر گلوش رو می بره. Stan نهایت خشمش رو بیان می کنه:
I hope you can’t sleep and you dream about it And when you dream I hope you can’t sleep and you scream about it I hope your conscience eats at you and you can’t breathe without me (امیدوارم نتونی بخوابی و رویاش رو ببینی، جیغ بکشی در موردش، امیدوارم وجدانت بخورتت و نتونی بدون من نفس بکشی). در آخر Stan متوجه میشه که دیر شده که نوار رو به امینم بفرسته. ماشینش تصادف می کنه.
در بند آخر لیریک، امینم می فهمه که جوابش به Stan دیگه دیر شده. با این عبارت شروع میکنه:
Dear Stan, I meant to write you sooner but I just been busy (Stan عزیز می خواستم زودتر جوابت رو بدم اما مشغول کارام بودم). هم چنین امینم یه امضا با کلاهی رو برای Matthew می فرسته. هم چنین امینم توصیه هایی رو به طرفدارش Stan می کنه:
You got some issues Stan I think you need some counseling and I really think you and your girlfriend need each otheror maybe you just need to treat her better (فکر کنم Stan عزیز به یکم مشاوره نیاز داری، واقعا فکر می کنم که تو و دوست دخترت بهم دیگه نیاز دارین یا بهتره تو باهاش بهتر رفتار کنی). در آخر که امینم می فهمه چه اتفاقی افتاده: (… توی ماشین اونا نواری پیدا می کنن، اما نگفتن که مال کی بودش، نامش بود… اون تو بودی لعنتی.) و بعدش یه صاعقه ناگهانی…
در مورد ویدیوی این ترانه:
ویدیوی این ترانه به کارگردانی Phil Atwell و Dr. Dre در کالیفرنیا گرفته شد که شامل بازیگر کانادایی Devon Sawa به عنوان Stan (طرفدار جدی Eminem)، خواننده پاپ بریتانیایی Dido (که Chorus ترانه رو می خونه)، و دوست دختر حامله Stan. این ویدیو خیلی مشهور شد.
این ویدیو در جوایز ویدیوی موزیک MTV در سال 2001 نامزد شده بود برای: ویدیوی سال، بهترین کارگردانی، بهترین ویدیو مرد، بهترین ویدیوی رپ و بهترین هنر فیلمبرداری. اما بطور شگفت آوری هیچ کدوم از اینها رو برنده نشد.
ویدیوی این ترانه، رتبه اول 100 ویدیوی موزیک برتر تاثیرگذار Much Music رو طی سالهای 1997 تا 2007 کسب کرد. هم چنین رتبه یک بهترین ویدیوی Much Music را از میان 100 ویدیو به خود اختصاص داد.
در جوایز Grammy سال 2001، امینم با اعتراض هم جنس بازان به خاطر لیریک این ترانه روبرو شد. امینم هم در جواب این ترانه رو با Elton John به جای Chorus که دایدو (Dido) می خونه، اجرا کرد.
از این ترانه به بعد، واژه Stan در دنیای هیپ هاپ، به کسانی اطلاق می شه که طرفدار جدی فرد خاصی هستن.
این ترانه از بهترین ترانه های هیپ هاپ تاحالا شناخته شده. در لیست Rolling Stone که 500 ترانه برتر رو لیست کرده، ترانه Stan در رتبه 290 بوده، یکی از دو ترانه برتر امینم. (اون یکی Lose Yourself)
